What 2M Means 2Me: Shauna T, Craig H, and Scott G’s Story

Earlier this year, we asked you, our residents, what does living at 2M mean to you? Is is the luxurious amenity spaces throughout the building, or your eco-friendly apartment? Our weekly fitness classes, or monthly resident events? While a beautiful apartment and glamorous amenities are nice to have, a strong sense of community is what truly makes a place feel like home. Your stories tell us that 2M is more than just a place to rest your head, and they deserve to be told.

Here, three of our contest winners and residents, Shauna, Craig, and Scott, share their story:

“After getting engaged while dating long-distance, Shauna and Craig searched for their first home together in D.C. An avid basketball fan, Craig had admired the basketball court of 2M while walking by.  He was pleased when Shauna, who had been on the swimming team at her Southern California high school, loved the rooftop lap pool and also wanted to move in. After touring the apartment, they decided that they needed to look no further and moved in June 2017.

While helping the couple move in, Scott admired the amenities and quality of the apartment — as well as its close proximity to a metro stop and grocery store. Having just started a new job, Scott chose to take a leap and move into the same building. Craig and Scott had lived on the same dorm room floor in college, and were now living in the same building once again! When Shauna is away on (frequent) work travel, Scott keeps Craig company by rooting for The Ohio State University Buckeyes together with him and competing with him at the gym.

Together, the three of them have helped shift the center of gravity of their friend group toward NoMA — encouraging their friends to join them at fun nearby events and bars such as NoMa Summer Screen and Wunder Garten, as well as inviting them to ample get-togethers at their respective apartments.

2M will always have a place in their hearts as the spot where they all reunited.

Your NoMa Holiday Gift Guide

Holiday Shopping in NoMa For Everyone On Your List

The holidays are in full swing, and it is time to get gifting! Lucky for you, you can knock out all of your shopping without ever leaving NoMa. There are a variety of shops and services throughout the neighborhood where you can find that special something for every individual on your list. Union Market will become your best friend – the various vendors and shops will help you cross off nearly every item on your gift list. There are several other gems throughout NoMa that will help you finish up any remaining shopping. We personally love to get creative and find the perfect gifts, so we have compiled a list of our go-to spots to find the perfect holiday gifts for everyone on your list.

For The Homebody

Everyone has that special someone on their list who loves to relax in the comfort of their home. Specialty art, decor, furniture, and all things home-related are the perfect gift for them. We would recommend making a stop at Salt & Sundry, a shop right inside of Union Market. Salt & Sundry is a home goods store with the most unique hand-crafted items you could find for your home. Intricate pillows and throws, candles, jewelry, and accessories are just a few of the things you will find here. We love the distinct style of Salt & Sundry, and all of their pieces make for the perfect gift for someone who likes to kick back and relax at home.

For The Foodie

Union Market is a food lover’s heaven. The market is full of vendors and restaurants serving delicious food and local products. A simple yet cherished gift for your favorite foodie is a gift card to the newest and greatest restaurant, and that can easily be found around Union Market. O-Ku, located right outside of the market, would be our top suggestion. This modern Japanese restaurant is new to the NoMa neighborhood and well worth visiting. Delicious sushi, intricate cocktails, and funky bars are what you can expect here. If that doesn’t sound right for the foodie on your list, you are sure to find something just wandering through Union Market.

For The Bookworm

If you haven’t caught on yet, Union Market will be one-stop shopping for all of your holiday needs. This is no exception for the bookworm on your list. Politics and Prose is an independent bookstore located in Union Market with a variety of books, classes, and events available. Whether you select the perfect book or pre-purchase a spot in one of their classes or events, you can’t go wrong. Politics and Prose memberships are available as well, which is another great option for the book lover you might be shopping for.

For The Fitness Junkie

Another great spot for gift purchasing in NoMa is the REI Flagship Store. REI has it all for the fitness lover on your list – running and yoga gear, hiking and cycling equipment, and much more. New running shoes for your favorite runner, a yoga mat for your beloved yogi, or the latest and greatest road bike for the cyclist in your life are all great gift ideas that can be found at REI. If you are shopping for a specific activity, but unsure of what gift items may be needed, check out REI’s “checklists” online for some further direction.

For The Explorer

Like Union Market, REI is our go-to store in NoMa when it comes to holiday shopping. Not only do they have everything you could need, and more, for any sort of outdoor activity, they have a variety of classes and events as well. REI is easily one of the top places to go for all things camping, hiking, and climbing. Utilize their checklists to find the perfect gift for your outdoor explorer, or take the expert advice from the store representatives. Either way, you can’t go wrong. Various classes and events are offered, such as Introduction to Outdoor Rock Climbing, Fall Foliage Hiking Series, Map and Compass Navigation Basics, and more. Purchase a spot in any of these courses as a fun and interactive present.

What 2M Means 2Me: Sommer’s Story

Earlier this year, we asked you, our residents, what does living at 2M mean to you? Is is the luxurious amenity spaces throughout the building, or your eco-friendly apartment? Our weekly fitness classes, or monthly resident events? While a beautiful apartment and glamorous amenities are nice to have, a strong sense of community is what truly makes a place feel like home. Your stories tell us that 2M is more than just a place to rest your head, and they deserve to be told.

Here, one of our contest winners and residents, Sommer, shares her story:

“Permanent has always been a something I’ve associated with the idea of home.  My parents still live in the house they bought when they were married twenty-five years ago; my mom has only ever lived in two different houses in her entire life.  These days, permanence and home seem almost contradictory.  Most people move a handful of times in their childhood, then move away for college, the spend a summer interning in an entirely new city before graduating and moving all over again.  But now that the ephemerality of my college years is over, my base instinct is to resort back to the symbiotic ideas of permanence and home on which I was raised.

When it was time to search for my first apartment out of college, I wanted a place that I could call home for more reasons than it just being the place where I slept.  I wanted the amenities, the style of a modern building, and breathtaking city views, but underneath that vanity what I wanted most was a community to call home.  2M blew me away because it offered both.  My roommate and I toured the building for the first time with our eyes wide and jaws dropped, marveling at the stunning glass and marble entrance, apartment units with monumental views, and of course the cerulean rooftop pool that would later be the focal point of most of my summer Snapchats.

And while the amenities themselves were more than enough to entice me, it was our leasing consultant, Sarah, who really sealed the deal for my roommate and me.  Sarah was energetic, genuine, and kind from the moment we walked into her office and seeing 2M through her eyes made us realize the quality and depth of the building’s community.  From morning yoga classes to make-your-own waffle bars to board game nights, Sarah explained that it wasn’t just the glamorous amenities that made the building so attractive, but the community of people that would stretch and eat and laugh with you along the way.  And for me, that’s what gave 2M the potential to be both permanent and a home.

After living at 2M for almost a year, I can proudly say that I’ve taken full advantage of the waffle bars and yoga classes, and that the pool and rooftop views here are luxuries I won’t be ready to give up anytime soon.  But more importantly, I’ve come to value the friendships I’ve made and the kindness of the 2M staff – and as a young woman in a brand new city, I can tell you that there’s nothing more comforting than the desk attendant welcoming you back at three a.m. with a smile because they’re happy you got home safe and sound.  2M has welcomed me to DC with open arms in the underappreciated forms of morning coffee and door holding when your hands are full.  I’m so proud to call this building my home, and I’m looking forward to all the memories I’m bound to make in a place as special as this.”

What 2M Means 2Me: Catalina’s Story

Earlier this year, we asked you, our residents, what does living at 2M mean to you? Is is the luxurious amenity spaces throughout the building, or your eco-friendly apartment? Our weekly fitness classes, or monthly resident events? While a beautiful apartment and glamorous amenities are nice to have, a strong sense of community is what truly makes a place feel like home. Your stories tell us that 2M is more than just a place to rest your head, and they deserve to be told.

Here, one of our contest winners and residents, Catalina, shares her story:

There’s no place like home. There’s nothing like sharing a meal with your family, watching a movie with your siblings and a warm cup of tea, having your mom bring breakfast in bed on a lazy Sunday, or cozying up under a blanket on the living room couch on a rainy day, just like you did when you were a kid. That feeling of belonging, of absolute comfort, is to be cherished, for it is hard to come across.

But what if that’s all the way in Argentina?

I moved to 2M a little over a year ago now, and I’ve never felt more welcomed and part of a close community than I have here. Not only is the building itself and its amenities very warm and welcoming, but there are also plenty of opportunities to meet fellow residents and connect with them. Wine tasting events, rooftop and even elevator encounters, and Sunday brunches in the lobby are some of the many instances where I have met other residents, and I’m excited to continue to do so over the coming months here at 2M. Not only that, but all of the 2M staff is incredibly friendly, and always go out of their way to make me feel welcome and at home. It’s heartwarming and reassuring to enter the building and see a warm, friendly face, not to mention after a long day!

Just a couple of weeks ago, my mother was visiting for a couple days from Argentina. Upon her arrival, the 2M staff immediately recognized and welcomed her back, and gave her the spare keys I had left for her at the front desk. My mother later told me about this and emphasized how 2M staff made her feel welcome and at home, which was heightened by the fact that she was exhausted from a 15-hour trip.

It’s refreshing and heartwarming to live in a building and form part of a community that cares so much about its residents and peers, that goes the extra mile to ensure its residents are happy and content and will make a tremendous effort to meet their needs.

I am more than happy and proud to be a 2M resident, and hope to continue to be one for a while! Thank you 2M for everything you do!”

What 2M Means 2Me: Lisa’s Story

Earlier this year, we asked you, our residents, what does living at 2M mean to you? Is is the luxurious amenity spaces throughout the building, or your eco-friendly apartment? Our weekly fitness classes, or monthly resident events? While a beautiful apartment and glamorous amenities are nice to have, a strong sense of community is what truly makes a place feel like home. Your stories tell us that 2M is more than just a place to rest your head, and they deserve to be told.

In the video below, Lisa, a three-year resident of 2M, shares her story:

“I am one of many low-income families that have been dreaming of living in a safe, loving, and peaceful building like 2M. See for me, living at 2M is not about the luxurious amenity spaces or the pool, and all of the other beautiful amenities that 2M has to offer. For me, it’s about having a peace of mind, a safe haven.”

“2M is my home. I love living here. I take pride in living here.”
