2M Street cares about our planet and our neighborhood, so we built our apartment community from the ground up following Green Building Act Certification Standards. From the use of energy efficient appliances to the harvesting of rainwater, we are working to create a healthier, less wasteful home for our residents. So what exactly have we done to make us so proud of 2M? Read on.
A portion of our rooftop is lined with 182 solar panels. Harnessing the sun’s rays, this 46kW photovoltaic system will serve to offset energy use and costs throughout the building.
Our onsite system will collect and harvest the first half-inch of each rainfall in two cisterns. Instead of flowing into the District’s storm water system, approximately 750,000 gallons of water will be captured each year and reused for irrigation and cooling tower makeup water. With the help of these cisterns, 2M Apartments will reduce our cooling tower and make up irrigation water consumption by up to 74%!
Electric Car Charging
Two wall-mounted charging stations will be installed in the parking garage for the charging of residents’ electronic vehicles. Residents will have exclusive use of these stations that are conveniently located within the comfortable confines of 2M. Each resident who wants to use the charging stations will have the opportunity to become a SemaCharge member, giving the resident access to smart phone enabled charging status updates, exclusive newsletter updates, online bill management tools, and first hand release of station locations citywide.
Our building is located just 2 blocks from the NoMa/Gallaudet Red Line Metro and within steps of multiple Metro bus stops. Capital Bikeshare provides bike rentals on demand, and with a station right in our neighborhood and the Metropolitan Branch Trail steps from our door, zero emissions is easier than ever!
We’re also taking the eco-friendly approach indoors with features like Energy Star stainless steel appliances, water conserving plumbing fixtures, energy efficient lighting, low VOC paints and primers, and green label certified flooring.
We’re thrilled to share that the electric car charging stations are officially installed in the 2M Street resident garage! We’re all about living a thoughtful, eco-friendly lifestyle and want to enable our hybrid car-driving residents to easily recharge at the end of the day.
So as you can imagine, when we first heard about Green Tomato Cars, we knew that we would soon be fast friends. Acclaimed as the green alternative to taxi and Uber services, this fleet of hybrid Toyota Prius V’s has found its way to DC from across the pond. Launched in March of 2006 with just 4 cars in West London, the company has now grown to a multinational service for the eco-conscious masses.
If you’re wondering what makes this company so different from other car services, there are a few key aspects that really set them apart. The core value that perked our ears is the fact that their entire fleet is made up of eco-friendly hybrid cars. The Toyota Prius V is an advanced hybrid vehicle that switches between a gas engine and an electric motor depending on the driving conditions. In addition to the Prius, Green Tomato will soon be adding a brand new Tesla model to their fleet. This means you’ll enjoy a quiet, comfortable ride while reflecting on how much Mother Nature must love you right now. When you’re done daydreaming, you can enjoy the free wifi onboard every vehicle.
Need more to feel good about? Green Tomato goes beyond reducing emissions to support other issues that plague our planet. One initiative to note is their “We Love Polar Bears” campaign, which involved “adopting” polar bears, one major victim of climate change, to incentivize use of their mobile app. Another program celebrates the birth of Green Tomato customer offspring. Whenever one of their vehicles drives an expectant mother to the hospital to give birth, a tree is planted in their honor (all they ask is that you share your good news and the little one’s name). Green Tomato is also a supporter of the UK’s Macmillan Cancer Research Center, but they aren’t content to stop there and are actively pursuing suggestions for how they can become more involved here in DC.
Now you know we love our friends at Uber, but have you ever perfectly timed your trip to the airport or an important event across town, only to find out that there are suddenly no cars in the vicinity? Green Tomato understands that time is money, and there are a couple of ways that they pass that value along to their customers. For one, use of their mobile app allows customers to book trips in advance, eliminating the guessing game. As we know, life isn’t always predictable, so the company puts the money where their mouth is by reimbursing account customers 50 cents for every minute their driver is late.
So now that you’re crushing hard on Green Tomato, go ahead and download their app here. But hold on, are you ready for the cherry (tomato) on top? We’ve got the inside scoop on a fantastic deal that offers rides from anywhere in DC to Dulles International Airport for only $60 or to Baltimore International Airport for only $69. You can read more about the offer here.
Car free living is a reality for many city dwellers. Whether by choice or by necessity, living without a car can be good for your health and for the environment! 2M residents are blessed with an abundance of transportation options. While 2M offers private parking and electric car charging stations for drivers, there are many transportation options just outside of our doors.
With the NoMa-Gallaudet University Metro station just a few blocks from our front door, getting around the district (and beyond) is a breeze. The Metro is an affordable way to make the commute to work or spend a weekend exploring other neighborhoods.
Another affordable option for getting around without a car is the Metro Bus. With multiple stops dotting North Capitol Street, hopping on a bus is an easy way to travel shorter distances or avoid cases of road rage. Invest in a SmarTrip Card that you can use on both the Metro rail or bus to make getting around even simpler.
A bike-friendly attitude is apparent in NoMa, with bike-share programs, secure bike stations, riding trails and a free tire pump spread throughout the neighborhood.
Capital Bikeshare is a great resource for bike sharing, with over 200 stations throughout the Washington, DC area. You can choose a 1-day, 3-day, 1-month or 1-year subscription. Simply head to your closest station and grab a bike to ride to work, the Metro, run errands, go shopping, or visit friends and family.
Another great option for your biking needs is the Union Station Bike Station, offering storage, repairs, secure bike parking, locker room access and retail sales. This sleek facility is a great addition for those living a green, car free lifestyle.
When you feel like taking it off of the city streets, the Metropolitan Branch Trail is a great option:
[box] “The Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) is an 8-mile trail that runs from Union Station in the District of Columbia to Silver Spring in Maryland. Following the Metropolitan Branch Line of the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad, the trail passes through numerous vibrant and historic neighborhoods as well as connecting to the National Mall. The MBT is an important transportation route providing connections to homes, work and play as well as access to seven Metro stations. Current plans include connections to the area’s trail network such as the Capital Crescent Trail, Anacostia Trails System, and integration into the East Coast Greenway.”
When you are ready for a special night out or are in need of reliable, timely transportation to the airport, Uber is a fantastic option. Download the free Uber app to your phone and sync up a credit or debit card. When you’re ready to be picked up, request a car and a luxurious car will be at your doorstep in minutes. When you arrive at your destination there is no need to tip; your trip summary and the amount billed is emailed to you.
With increasing population and increasing concern for the environment, car free living is certainly something to consider. At 2M, you can rest easy knowing you have an abundance of transportation options outside your front door.
